Falakro Mountain National Park protects the rugged Falakro massif, offering wild alpine landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and year-round outdoor recreation including hiking and winter sports.
Falakro Mountain National Park is located in the eastern part of Greece’s Macedonia region, near the town of Drama. The park centers on Falakro Mountain, which rises sharply to an elevation of 2,232 meters (7,323 feet), making it one of northern Greece’s highest peaks. The landscape features steep slopes, rocky outcrops, dense coniferous and deciduous forests, alpine meadows, and several natural springs. This diversity allows for a range of ecosystems that support wildlife such as wild goats, deer, foxes, and birds of prey including golden eagles.
Historically, the area has been valued for its natural resources and traditional mountain villages. Today, the park balances conservation with recreation and offers visitors scenic trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking in the warmer months and access to a popular ski resort during winter. The park’s varied terrain provides panoramic views of the surrounding Rhodope mountain range and the Aegean Sea on clear days.
Key landmarks include the summit plateau with its rugged cliffs and seasonal snowfields, and nearby archaeological sites revealing the region's ancient human presence. The park attracts outdoor enthusiasts with its combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage. It is an important region for both regional biodiversity and eco-tourism development, giving visitors opportunities for wildlife observation, photography, and backcountry exploration.
